Design trends that you might want to think twice before using

Designing a website requires a lot of planning and understanding of what works and what does not. It requires you to thoroughly understand current trends and analyze whether they will work in the long run. Here are some of the trends that you might not want to include in a modern web design:

Hiding everything under a hamburger menu

Hamburger menus are most appropriate for mobile websites. Mobile designs require simplified navigation that does not take up too much of the visible area of the screen. But this trend has slowly crept into desktop sites too. No doubt, it makes the website look cleaner and appealing, but it definitely has some adverse effects too. It reduces discoverability. Ecommerce websites and news sites require their news items and products to be displayed ubiquitously. You cannot force users to open a menu and search for news stories and popular products. A point to be noted is that if your global menu is not obvious, users will not take the effort to look for it and analyze where they should be browsing – they will browse away.

Front page carousels

Carousels are bad for search engine optimization. Carousels are for pure aesthetics. Your keywords and other optimization will be directly in the body of the web page. Web page performance is also impacted as most of the carousels have high resolution images. The load time of the front page is impacted. The Java Script or JQuery used also affects the performance. The content is automatically pushed below the fold and most of the people do not bother to read the content on the carousels – something called as banner blindness.

Parallax Scrolling

Parallax scrolling is a technique that allows the foreground and the background to scroll at different speeds. This creates a beautiful illusion of depth and gives your website a ‘wow’ effect. Well, this is however considered bad for SEO, as it is generally used on one page websites that generally have very little content for search engines to crawl. The text is also sometimes embedded on the graphics. Due to the heavy use of graphics, web page load times are impacted. It may create usability issues too.

Complex load screens

When your website loads, make sure that there is no flash animation that the user has to sit through. Your landing page should be clear and intuitive. Well, a user will definitely browse away from pages that have lengthy animations that the user has to compulsorily sit through.

Too much Java Script

Java Script can do a lot of things that other languages cannot. But it adversely affects the site loading times. Well, this totally spoils the user experience on the mobile sites. Moreover, Java Script is not crawled by search engines. Some rankings might be affected if there is too much Java Script on your page.

Complex Typography

Using multiple typefaces makes your site look interesting. However, too many of them totally spoil the reading experience. Stick to familiar fonts. Get creative only when necessary.
